Appointments & Finding Care
Practical advice for finding healthcare providers in Texas and a simple checklist to make your next medical appointment easier.
Ways to find healthcare providers in Texas
- Your health insurance provider’s directory: the lists of doctors a plan covers. Find it on the insurer’s own website or app.
- 211 Texas: dial 2-1-1 or visit 211texas.org to search community health services by county.
- Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs): community-based clinics often serving people regardless of insurance. Use the official federal health center locator to check availability in your area.
- Local public health departments: many counties run clinics or publish local resource listings; your county’s official website is the best starting point.
- A word of caution with online searches: be wary of listing sites that charge fees or appear to book appointments on a provider’s behalf. Patterns change, so confirm every provider and contact details before making decisions.
The appointment preparation checklist
Whether it’s a new patient visit or a follow-up, bringing the right things saves time and helps the visit go smoothly.
Before the visit
- Confirm the address, time, and any parking instructions.
- Check whether the provider accepts your insurance, if you have it, and confirm a co-payment if applicable.
- Write down your symptoms: when they started, what makes them better or worse.
- Compile your questions in advance. The top three are usually: What’s my main issue? What are my options? What happens next?
What to bring
- Photo ID and your insurance card, if insured.
- A list of current medications and doses (including over-the-counter ones and supplements).
- Allergies and past surgeries or major conditions you know about.
- Any recent test results you have copies of.
- Your written questions.
During the visit
- Be specific: real, everyday symptoms tell the provider more than diagnosis guesses.
- Ask what the next step is and when results are expected.
- Ask for the plan in writing, or after the visit check your patient portal, since many providers post visit summaries there.
Understanding health insurance basics (Texas)
Important insurance terms, in plain language:
- Premium: the amount paid each month for the plan.
- Deductible: the amount paid yourself before insurance begins paying benefits, in most plans.
- Co-payment / copay: a fixed amount per visit or prescription.
- Network: the providers that participate with your plan. Going outside the network usually costs more.
